Plowing Match Legacy Scholarship for 2015 Now Available

Central Elgin, ON, April 1, 2015. – Elgin County is pleased to announce that the application process is open for the 2015 International Plowing Match (IPM) Legacy Agricultural Scholarship.

Each year $2500 is awarded to one female and one male student who are attending college or university in Canada to study an agriculturally-related program. Examples of such programs include agricultural sciences, agribusiness, agri-tourism, nutrition, earth sciences, and food sciences. The scholarship is provided as a result of generous support of legacy funds from the 2010 International Plowing Match hosted by Elgin County.

Elgin County Museum to Present 5th Annual Vimy Lecture on April 9th

On Thursday April 9th at 2pm the museum welcomes Rev. Canon Scott. The Rev. Canon Major Frederick Scott was a British Imperialist who waxed eloquently in both prose and poetry about the British Empire.

A very orthodox high church Anglican, at the age of 53 Scott dropped everything when war was declared to offer his services to the cause of King and Country. He became padre of the 1st Canadian Corps in the Canadian Expeditionary Force and was a respected confidant, friend and spiritual guide to officers and men.

2015 Betty Want Scholarship Application Now Available for Graduating Elgin County High School Students

Applications for this year’s United Way Betty Want scholarship are now available. There is one $1,000 scholarship offered for an Elgin County high school student graduating this year. The scholarship was created to recognize Betty Want’s many years of service with United Way. Application deadline is April 20, 2015.

Elgin Youth Help Deliver Message: Smoking on Screen Kills in Real Life

Last year, the Ontario Tobacco Research Unit estimated that in an average year 13,241 Ontarians aged 12-17 are recruited to smoking by watching smoking in movies.
On February 21st, Elgin Youth voiced their support for Smoke-Free Youth Rated Movies in a cross-border rally o
n the eve of the Academy Awards. Youth from Canada and the U.S. joined forces to deliver a stark message: Smoking on screen kills in real life.

The Elgin-St. Thomas United Way helps to fund many of the agencies which are at the heart of Elgin-St. Thomas’s caring community. Focus on building a stronger Elgin County for the future is reflected in the agency’s identification of priority areas which this year included: From Poverty to Possibility, Healthy People, Strong Communities, and All That Kids Can Be. A decline in donations over the past several years has prompted the organization to seek community input.

THOMAS – Nomination forms for the 42nd Annual Honours and Awards Banquet are now being accepted at the Parks and Recreation Department, located at the St. Thomas Timken Community Centre, 2 Third Avenue. The deadline is 4:00 pm Friday March 20, 2015. This year’s banquet will take place at 6 pm at Memorial Auditorium on Thursday April 23, 2015.

Invitation to Make Treble

The Treble Makers Women’s Choir has been singing, learning and having fun together since 2007. Each year they share their song and enthusiasm in two concerts – one pre-Christmas and one in the spring.

Founded by Sharon Little, The Treble Makers welcome women, aged fourteen and up, who want to sing a variety of music – from Bach to Boogie and Beyond. It’s an educational and performing group – members learn singing techniques and music reading skills in an environment which is encouraging, supportive and filled with laughter.

Elgin Ballroom Dance Club Takes Steps to Help Local Children

When it comes to taking steps to help the less fortunate, there’s a group in Elgin that knows that dance well.

The Elgin Ballroom Dance Club made a $5,000 donation to Christmas Care Thursday (Dec. 11) bringing the club’s total donations to children’s charities to nearly $60,000.

“Life isn’t a waltz for everyone,” said treasurer Linda Dekort, of Dutton. “We are proud to be able to share with the community.”
