The new TTC manager, Matt Cossette was on hand to meet those who dropped in. ![]() Organizers and community have come together for the past three years to make the “Bowling for Boobs” fundraiser a fun, widely supported and highly successful community event. This past Friday thru Sunday, teams bowled at both Heritage Lanes and Park N Bowl, added this year to accommodate the 109 participating teams. All those balls, laughs, fun and pink gear added up to $43,000 raised for the Canadian Breast Cancer Society. ![]() (Photos by Mark Girdauskas) The Diamond Jubilee Award Ceremony for local honorees was held on Friday June 29 in the CASO Station in St. Thomas. As Canadians celebrate the 60 years of service by Queen Elizabeth II, the awards are being presented as a way for Canadians to also honour fellow Canadians and their service to community and country. Mark Girdauskas photographed each of the proud recipients, plus caught many candid shots throughout the evening during which MP Joe Preston and MPP Jeff Yurek presented 44 awards to local community members. The support and compassion offered all year long at Serenity House Hospice got a boost from caring community members this past Sunday (May 5) at the eighth annual Hike for Hospice event. Hikers could choose from 2.5, four and ten kilometre routes through Waterworks Park and found the lovely spring morning weather graciously accommodating. Money raised will help Serenity House in meeting its commitment to supporting, educating and empowering individuals and their families who are living with a progressive life-threatening illness. Those services are provided through dedicated staff, volunteers and community partners. April 25, 2012, London, ON – A generous donation of $500,000 from the Estate of Mrs. Dorothy Palmer is helping thousands of children and their caregivers at Children’s Hospital, London Health Sciences Centre. The gift is also honouring the memory of an Aylmer couple who cared deeply for children and for their community.
The $500,000 gift will be used to support simulation training for health care professionals and to purchase specialized equipment and supplies. A number of hospital departments will benefit from the purchases including the Paediatric Medical Day Unit; Neonatal Intensive Care Unit; Child and Adolescent Mental Health and the Art Therapy Program. ![]() Community Fellowship Dinners volunteers and sponsors make a little noise annually at with their fundraising ‘Bean Blast’. For the rest of the year they work without fanfare to fring an invaluable service to the community. Thursday (April 19) was the 15th Annual Bean Blast where volunteers serve up a baked bean lunch at St. Anne’s Centre with proceeds going to support the Community Fellowship Dinners. Ontario White Bean Producers is among several sponsors of the spring-time event which features yummy slow-baked beans, door prizes and entertainment. ![]() The St. Thomas-Elgin Local Immigration Partnership Council hosted a Settlement Strategy Launch event Tuesday March 20. The celebration of the work of many individuals and institutions who contributed to the strategy’s creation brought a great turn-out to the CASO station, including Mark Girdauskas who was on hand for photos. Photos by Mark Girdauskas ![]() The Elgin County Walk for Memories this past Saturday (January 21, 2012) prompted some exuberant “tweeting” from organizers as they raised close to $24,000 in funds. Walkers of all ages took part in the indoor fund-raiser at Parkside Collegiate Institute. Top high school fundraisers were St. Joe’s and PCI. Congratulations to all of the volunteers and walkers! The Walk is one of the activities of Alzheimer Month in January. This year’s theme is “Let’s face it! Get the facts. Know for sure.” The importance of awareness has been highlighted by a recent Alzheimer study showing that Canadians tend to delay seeing a doctor about signs of dementia. Sandra Kellestine loves purses and shoes boxes – especially ones destined to bring joy and hope to children in desperate situations through ‘Operation Christmas Child’. ![]() Every year thousands of shoeboxes are sent to needy children all around the world through the program sponsored by the Samaritan’s Purse organization. Each box is filled with school supplies, personal hygiene products, small toys, hats, candy etc. for boys and girls ages two to fourteen years old. “Everybody thought receiving the shoe box was the best thing that ever happened in our lives,” says Khin Khin, now 18, in recalling her time seven years ago living in India as a refugee from Burma, waiting to be transferred to a new country. ![]() Sandy is the Logistics Co-ordinator for the St. Thomas and Aylmer area. Born in Shedden, Ontario she has lived in Elgin County her entire life. This is her second year in this position and she hopes to surpass the 1200 boxes collected last year. That may very well happen as she as already handed out more than 1500 boxes. Sandy and husband John Kellestine plan to travel to Central America next Spring to distribute the boxes. Samaritan’s Purse is the Canadian arm of a nondenominational evangelical Christian organization that has been providing spiritual and physical aid to hurting people around the world since 1970.
