"Buy Local, Buy Fresh" 2014 Update Introduces Interactive Web Features

Elgin County’s  guide to bringing home unbeatable flavours from local producers has evolved over the years, from a line drawing to a full-colour map/guide. In 2010 it was also rebranded with a new logo and the “Buy Local, Buy Fresh” name. On August 20th, the network launched a brand new interactive website version of the map, linked to individual farm pages, Facebook and Twitter.

ICE Test Kitchen to be a "Cool Space for "Foodpreneurs"

Members of the public got a “taste” of the new Test Kitchen Incubator at an open house on Tuesday, hosted by the Innovation Centre for Entrepreneurs (ICE) and Elgin Business Resource Centre (EBRC).  It was the official launch of the facility on South Edgeware Rd which will provide opportunities for the area’s burgeoning agriculture and specialty foods market.

Culinary Black Box Magic at the Arts & Cookery Bank

Nine young chefs presented their delectable creations for judging in a Black Box Challenge at the Arts & Cookery Bank this past Friday (July 26th). The competition topped off a week-long Advanced Culinary Boot Camp whose “simple and fresh approach helps young chefs (ages 15-20) understand the food they eat, the landscape that produces it and the hands that grow it.”

The results were impressive. Poise, polish and style are the words that come to mind. Five teams (two per team and an extra lone chef) drew for one of five boxes containing three mystery items. They then put all their skills and creative talents to integrating the ingredients into an appetizer and a dessert to tantalize and impress the judges.

Watermelon Fest Celebrates Fifteen Years, Plus Here's A Cool Salad for the Labour Day Weekend

Watermeon Fest in Straffordville celebrated its 15th anniversary this past weekend. The festival impressed Festivals and Events Ontario last March when it received recognition as one of the Top 100 Festivals and Events in Ontario. On Saturday (August 25) it impressed festival attendees with a bigger-than-ever line-up of activities and the star attraction – watermelon!

A display at the event noted the festival’s successful fifteen years as a partnership between a group of dedicated local volunteers and the Municipality of Bayham
