The Elgin Historical Society has released two new productions in the ongoing series: "Elgin History Vignettes". There are always surprises to discover in our local history - the first presents a strangely unfolding plot by German agents and the second the talented accomplishments of a Hollywood pioneer born in St. Thomas. |
Over the next years we will continue to observe centennial anniversaries of the Great War. Most of these stories come to us from over the sea. This war story is very close to home. On July 4th 1915, St. Thomas was the target of an attempted bomb attack. Americans working as German agents planned to bomb a shipment of horses at the stockyards in St. Thomas, just east of the CASO Station in St. Thomas. Learn how the plot unfolded, and how close St. Thomas came to being on the front lines of the First World War.
On a lighter note, we celebrate 138th anniversary of Dell Henderson's birth (July 5th, 1877). St. Thomas' Dell Henderson was a pioneer of Hollywood. In fact, his career predates Hollywood, being one of the first group to venture west to make films with D. W. Griffith.
Dell directed nearly 200 films and appeared on screen over 300 times in a film career that spanned the first half of the 20th Century. Although Dell would direct and perform in a range of genres he made his biggest impact in comedy. Join us for a few laughs with Dell and his famous friends.
