No matter what the weather, there are always lots of smiles on the faces of the 300 or so walkers and runners who come out. There’s a whole lot of positivity to be found in this event that goes well beyond it’s lucky shamrock logo and name.
- It raised close to $50,000 for Inn Out of the Cold over the last four years.
- Last year it donated $1,000 to the Eat2Learn school nutrition program
- Community spirit is on display with a sea of green-bedecked families, individuals, organizations (and dogs)
- It encourages active participation by families and walkers/runners of any level
- Participation is easy with this event which is well organized and just plain fun.
Of course, the success of the "Shuffle" is due more go good planning than to good luck. "It is the joint vision of local running enthusiasts who wanted to find a way to give back to the community,” says Kathi Joliffe, a co-director of the event along with Doreen Jensen and Noel MacKay. “Running was a common interest among our group of friends so it seemed like a natural fit. We want to encourage families to get outside and get active together with the added bonus of helping out a good cause.” The event offers a 10k and 5k run as well as a 5k and 2k walk so people of all ages and stages can participate.

In the past, the funds generated by the event have allowed the Inn to purchase beds for those with mobility issues, lap tops, and a much needed washer and dryer amongst other items. Inn out of the Cold operates November to April each year and provides those in need with a warm meal, safe place to stay, shower and breakfast during the cold months.
