An array of quilts with diverse materials, styles and stories is on display at the Sparta Church Museum & Cultural Centre until mid-October. The more than fifty quilts include work by many well-known local quilters, such as three-time champion Hattie Lawton.
“Quilting offered the pioneer women a chance to use their artistic abilities and also quilting bees gave them a chance to visit with friends and neighbours while completing practical objects for their homes. Quilt making has gone out of fashion several times and only near the end of the 20th century did we realize how much of our early pioneer history is reflected in quilts. They are truly treasures from our past. Enjoy viewing these quilts from the Sparta area from the middle of the 1800s to present day.
