St. Thomas-Elgin Public Art Centre - 45 Years by Josepha Van den Anker

9/1/2014

Picture
2014 marks the 45th anniversary of the St. Thomas-Elgin Art Centre … I believe much or all of STEPAC’s achievement as an “A” status gallery can be directly attributed to the values, energies, hard work and selfless stewardship of two people: Laura Woermke, Executive Director/Curator and Sherri Howard, Education and Event Coordinator. This dynamic duo continue to re-invent our culture and society by innovation: in the nurture of new ideas and by welcoming respect extended to all individuals within our community.

Capturing Magic in Oil: Artist Elizabeth Kusinski

7/1/2014

Picture
Elizabeth Kusinski brings an observant eye and affinity for rich colours and textures to a myriad of subjects from landscapes to streetscapes, portraits and florals. Her flowers may be most immediately attention-grabbing – they are luscious renditions which are likely to bring to the viewer’s imagination perfumed scents and the hum of bees. They will lead you on to discover more of her work and, with their dewy freshness, they are also representative of the attitude which she brings to all of her far-ranging subjects. For the past twenty years she has sought to challenge herself to capture what she finds around her in ways that are new and refreshing.

And So It Seams - Seamstress Tracy Gordon

5/1/2014

Picture
For Tracy Gordon, being a seamstress has been a joyous adventure. A recent project found her immersed in the vibrant colours and intricate stitching of a unique “crazy quilt”, a work of textile art started by a St. Thomas woman more than 117 years ago.  However, she is just as at home sewing a costume for a customer’s imagined character from the future.

Chatting recently in her Dutton studio, Tracy described a path she has happily pursued for twenty-five years – one which has taken her from quilting and sewing to the creation of one period piece which in turn led her to become a historical re-enactor and then to specialize in the creation of period costumes for herself and others.

Art as Inspiration with the Port Stanley Art Guild

5/1/2014

Picture"Port Stanley" by Heather Keating
The visual artist finds inspiration in many places, from nature, to a piece of music, a mentor, a new medium, the work of a fellow artist, travel, an art class, or contemplation of a philosophical idea or social issue. Much of the feeling of anticipation at the annual Port Stanley Art Guild (PSAG) show derives from the chance for attendees to discover where the artists have found inspiration over the past year for their new paintings, and how they have interpreted and shared it.
