The Elgin County Heritage Centre exists to promote Elgin County's rich historical and agricultural heritage by acquiring, preserving, exhibiting and interpreting artifacts pertaining to the history of the County of Elgin; and to provide leadership and support to County museums in the promotion of a heritage partnership. Museum is open year round with changing exhibits, lectures and gift shop. Call for seasonal hours.

This exhibition from the Bruce County Museum allows you to experience Europe in Medieval times:  handle tools of the period, do a brass rubbing of a famous knight and try on chain mail; get your photo in the pillory.

Visit "Edison & Bayham History on Display" at Bayham's Family Table Restaurant. Artifacts are owned and managed by the Bayham Historical Society.

Four generations of Edison survived floods, fires, wars, revolutions and epidemics to become one of the founding families of Vienna, Ontario, once dubbed “the most flourishing place in Canada West” by a Toronto reporter in 1851. Thomas Alva Edison visited his great-grandfather in Vienna as a child, and the history of that connection is also maintained in the collection. 
Visit the exhibit "Plank Road: Travel through Bayham" to be unveiled at the restaurant on June 3 at 12:30pm, during the Vienna EdisonFest (from 7pm June 2 through 4pm June 4) as part of the Elgin County Museums' Canada 150 Celebration theme, "Transportation".

The museum focuses on military history, with an emphasis on Elgin County and its citizens and the role they have played in Canadian military history back to the founding of the Talbot Settlement.

Since locating at 30 Talbot St in 1979, the Museum has worked to collect, record, interpret and exhibit items relating to military history with an emphasis on Elgin County and its residents. today, the Museum boasts close to 9,000 files on individual from the County, some dating back to the War of 1812, and research is ongoing.

Exhibit: The Life and Legacy of Sir Arthur Currie

The museum officially opens for the season on March 5th with the travelling exhibit, The Life and Legacy of Sir Arthur Currie, on loan from Museum Strathroy-Caradoc.

Drawing from sources and materials relevant to his early life in rural Strathroy, Ontario, the exhibit considers the influence of his youth on his remarkable rise through the ranks from a militia gunner before the First World War, to become the first Canadian commander of the Canadian Expeditionary Force. The exhibit traces the humble roots of Canada's greatest military commander and celebrates his achievements and legacy as a source of national pride.

We pick fruit from your trees and put it to good use. We are looking for fruit trees in St. Thomas and Elgin County to take part in our fruit tree program. If your property has a fruit tree, let us know. We will send a team to harvest your tree for you and you'll get a share of the fruit. The rest will be shared among volunteers and food programs for those in need.

We are also looking for volunteers to assist with this program. Please let us know if you have further questions or would like to help out.

Forge & Anvil Museum
The cob museum building is one of the many examples of early Ontario architecture in Sparta, which began as a Quaker settlement in 1813. It served as a blacksmith shop and carriage works in the early community. The artifacts reflect the history of the Sparta area.

Forge and Anvil Museum is owned and operated by the Sparta and District Historical Society. The Society also hosts a re-enactment dinner the second Saturday in November.

A special Canada 150 display on transportation in 1867 in Sparta, "The Village Blacksmith"  opens Jun 1.

The Backus-Page House Museum is located amidst the beauty of John E. Pearce Provincial Park. This restored Georgian-style 1850s residence is home to a living history museum. It is one of the first brick homes built in what would eventually become Dunwich Township. The Tyrconnell Heritage Society was incorporated in 1994 with the express purpose of restoring the house and property to its 1850s condition.

"Transportation Between Lake Erie and the Thames River"
Glasfax will be showing antique glass collectibles in two of our downstairs cabinets.
" I Am Canadian". A showcase of approximately a dozen western Elgin artefacts. Each item will represent a Canadian value including justice, community peace keeping, family and more.

Fall Hours Labour Day to Thanksgiving

Housed in the former 1913 Michigan Central Locomotive Shops, the museum includes steam, diesel and electric locomotives, cabooses, work equipment, passenger cars and an operating model railway, much of which has been restored by volunteers. Major fundraising efforts such as "A Day Out with Thomas" contribute to the ongoing refurbishment of both the railway equipment and museum building. Such work will ensure the museum's future role in the preservation and presentation of Elgin County Railway heritage.

Built between 1822 and 1824, the St. Thomas Anglican Church, today called the Old St. Thomas Church, is one of the oldest structures in St. Thomas, Ontario. The Church was continuously used between its founding and 1877. The church was made a designated heritage property in 1982. Summer Staff are on duty for tours where you can see the work that has been done to preserve church and cemetery for future generations.

The Archives preserves and provides access to Elgin County Municipal Records, collections including the Scott Studio fonds (approximately 100,000 negatives created by three generations of photographers, documenting all aspects of life in Elgin-St. Thomas from the 1870s to the 1980s); the records of Alma College, records of several Elgin County Women’s Institutes, including “Tweedsmuir Histories” for communities throughout the County, a large volume of records documenting the history of the Anderson Department Store in St. Thomas as well as an extensive list of other records and photographs related to Elgin County.

Port Burwell Marine Museum & Historic Lighthouse (1840)
Mid-May - Labour Day

The museum's abundant collection of historic artifacts, incredible collection of lighthouse lenses including the rotating fresnel lens and period photographs facilitate a look into Port Burwell's past and spur memories of the port's earlier days.

Port Burwell Lighthouse is one of the oldest all wood lighthouses in Canada. It was completed in 1840 and restored in 1988 by Mennonite craftsmen. Perhaps the only Lighthouse that offers visitors a climb to the top for a magnificent panaoramic view.

Visit the Port Burwell Marine Museum's special exhibit "Port Burwell: The Meeting Place of Water, Road and Rail" opening May 18 as part of the Elgin County Museums' Canada 150 Celebration theme, "Transportation".
