October 13 2016 - Earlier this year, the Elgin Theatre Guild (ETG) soft-launched a “Save the Balcony” fundraising campaign toward the estimated $60,000 renovation costs to stabilize and restore the beautiful historic Princess Avenue Playhouse balcony, located at 40 Princess Ave, St. Thomas. To date, the ETG Board has allocated their reserve of nearly $20,000; sought community support through special fundraising events; and received financial contributions from VIP Members, Playhouse guests, and partners like Relish Elgin.
ETG Board President, Lesley Chapman said, “We are so thankful for the incredible support we have received for this heritage building. We take great pride in preserving its culture for this community. We’re excited to reopen the balcony seating in this charming venue so that more people can attend and enjoy live theatre and music performances”.
ETG’s new Community Liaison Director, Ronda commented, “The generosity and commitment from Green Lane Community Trust Fund Committee provided the resources we needed to complete phase 1. We appreciate the donation and are proud to say that this beautiful 112 year old balcony is stable and will be open for our guest’s enjoyment during this year’s Christmas Panto performance of Alice in Wonderland.”
Chris Chapman, ETG Board Facility Director added, “Now that all of the structural unknowns have been addressed and the balcony meets modern-day engineering codes, we have a better idea of the work required for phase 2. We have a goal to raise $25,000 for the finishing touches to restore this preserved, functioning balcony to its beauty”.
Heather Jackson, Mayor of St. Thomas, Green Lane Community Trust Fund Committee Member and frequent guest of the Princess Avenue Playhouse said, “This is a great investment into a historical landmark and will benefit the thriving arts culture for residents in St. Thomas and Elgin County.”
