Lanterns Light Pinafore Lake

Lantern Ceremony in Pinafore Park

Friday August 6 marked the 65th anniversary of the drop on Hiroshima of an atomic bomb. Three days later a second bomb was dropped on Nagasaki. In Japan, 65,000 people gathered today to remember those who were killed. In Pinafore Park, St. Thomas, adults and children gathered to launch floating lanterns in memory of those who died, and with a hope for peace. The event has been held in the park for more twenty years. The August 6 ceremony was introduced by Julie Berry with a minute of silence in remembrance of all victims of war.

Ron Kingswood's "Landscapes" Opens at STEPAC; Cactus, Cattle & Cowboys; Arts ...

Opening of Ron Kingswood's "Landscapes" at STEPAC

Ron Kingswood's Landscapes opened Friday July 17 at the St. Thomas-Elgin Public Art Centre. The one-man show fills the gallery space with predominantly large-scale canvases which represent Kingswood's search over the past decade "for a deeper response to the landscape, away from pictorial works, to a more metaphorical and emblematic objective."

At the well-attended evening reception, Toronto Gallery owner Sandra Ainsley, presented opening remarks. Kingswood then spoke briefly about his exhibit, calling it his "manifesto", and a reflection of his desire to "risk everything for the unknown" in his art. He also indicated appreciation for support from the community and the Art Centre.

Alongside Kingswood's exhibit of recent works, the Timken Foundation Gallery displays a selection of Kingswood's earlier works. Entitled Take Root, the paintings "celebrate his connection with nature. They have been selected to augment "Landscapes" and to demonstrate his growth as an artist, in his thought and expression."

Kingswood notes that " I can only do what I am hearing". The complementary exhibits offer an excellent opportunity to catch a glimpse into one artist's search to develop and to "transcend the physical."

Landscapes and Take Root continue until September 11th.

Thomas Arrives!

Thomas the Tank Engine was back in St. Thomas Friday July 16 to Sunday July 18, for his eagerly awaited annual visit. Bill Watson, who heads up the Thomas event for the Elgin County Railway Museum, reported on Sunday that they were well on their way to seeing the 20,000 visitors expected for the two-weekend event.

"It's a dream come true for the children to see Thomas," said Watson. And it's not just Thomas that makes the event so enjoyable – there are 10 play tables in the Imaginations Station; kids love the inflatable area and Sir Topham Hatt; it's really a day out. Close to 400 volunteers help make the event possible each year, with 75 on site at any given time, and including most of the city council members, noted Watson.

Not only does the event bring happiness to so many kids each year, Watson pointed out, it has also made possible the purchase of Elgin County Railway Museum property.

Thomas will be back Friday July 23 to Sunday July 25. Call 1-888-222-6608 or visit www.thomasandfriends.com/dowt to find out more.

Wardsville Bicentennial - A community's Story in Barn Quilts

It is two hundred years since George Ward was asked by the British government to set up a tavern on Longwoods Road between Thamesville and Delaware. Wardsville's Bicentennial party was held from June 18 to 20, 2010 to honour its local pioneers and artists. The celebration is one of the first events to mark the Bicentennial of the War of 1812-14.

In October 2009, Wardsville's quilt committee began designing a fabric quilt to commemorate Wardsville's founder. The following April, a beautiful quilt featuring 30 blocks that tell the story of his life was unfurled and went on to win second prize in the Group category at the International Plowing Match 2010 quilt competition.

Each of the block designs has been painted onto an eight-food square mural to be mounted on the barns and historic buildings of the area.

Wardsville's celebration was launched Friday June 18 with the display of the thirty "barn quilts" in Wardsville Little Kin Park. A fun weekend packed with dinners, music, dances, historical re-enactments and more, was designed to "promote, encourage and build community pride and identity," said organizer Denise Corneil.

Twenty –Five Years of Farming at Empire Valley

Joy and Dave Westelaken invited friends and customers to the farm this past weekend, to help them celebrate twenty five years of farming (and Dave's 50th birthday). Empire Valley is located just a few minutes west of Wallacetown on Highway #3 and draws customers who value the fresh produce available at their farm market, most of it grown and harvested on their farm. During the celebration, The Tyrconnell Heritate Society provided bbq; visitors savoured snacks and cakes in the greenhouse and kids enjoyed making gourd creations.

The highlight of the celebration was the opportunity to tour the farm and hear a bit about the heritage home, crops and greenhouse.

Heritage of the Rails 2

Railway history came to life at the CASO Station in St. Thomas with the North America Railway Hall of Fame presentation of Heritage of the Rails 2 on June 20. The skits were fabrications of what could have happened, with many elements of historical detail. The event provided an opportunity to check out the renovation progress and ask questions about the station. More about the building and ways to become involved in this community project can be found at www.narhf.org.

Production of the eleven vignettes was made possible by many actors plus the committee – Jeffrey Booth (project coordinator / writer); Linda Martin (volunteer coordinator); Beth Goldsworthy (stage direction & props). Below are just a few "scenes" from the production.

Submarine Ojibwa Coming Soon to A Harbour Near You

It has been twenty-five years since the really big elephant arrived in St. Thomas, and some hard-working people at the Elgin Military Museum must have thought it was time for another big idea. What they came up with is a submarine weighing in at 1200 tons and stretching 297 feet in length.

"Project Ojibwa is coming soon to a harbour near you!"

The Elgin Military Museum in St. Thomas was the site today of an announcement by Joe Preston, MP for Elgin-Middlesex-London, that the Museum will receive $1,920,000 to obtain, transport, mount and operate HMCS Ojibwa as a naval monument and museum pending appropriate approvals.

Joe Preston remembers being immediately intrigued when approached by the museum group with their proposal to bring the submarine to Elgin County, a proposal that "combined naval heritage, economic development and tourism." The project will be funded through the Community Adjustment Fund, a two-year, $1-billion national program aimed at addressing the short-term economic needs of the communities hit hardest by the global economic recession.

There is good cause for the optimism in the air at today's announcement. The Ojibwa's sister submarine was brought to Rimouski, Quebec and attracted 90,000 visitors to the area in its first year of operation.

Ian Raven, Executive Director of the Military Museum, noted that the project is a "quantum leap" for the Museum, having had slow but steady progress up to this point. Deborah Jarvis, Museum President stated that the project, "if successful, will result in a fitting and lasting tribute to the Canadian Navy and all its members, past, present and future."

Raven acknowledged that both volunteers and further funding (approximately another million) will be required for the project's completion. He stated, however, that the museum's exhibit celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Canadian Navy demonstrated that local people are very interested in supporting the commemoration of naval history.

How do you bring a submarine from Dartmouth Nova Scotia to southwestern Ontario, one might wonder. The answer is, with an expert partner. "The Museum is very fortunate to have secured the support of BMT Fleet Technology for this project," says Raven. BMT project manager Andy Willis said "Having served in Oberon class submarines during my service with the Royal Navy, I am proud to be able to play a part in preserving the HMCS Ojibwa for future generations of Canadians."

The plan is to complete the clean-up and repairs on the submarine when it arrives here. Four possible sites on Lake Erie in Elgin County have been considered for the submarine's new home. It will be located on land close to water, and a restaurant (featuring submarines?) will also be part of the attraction. The arrival date has not been determined, but Raven is hopeful the museum will open in 2011.

Deborah Jarvis (Museum President), Andy Wills (BMT Project Manager), Ian Raven (Museum Curator) and Joe Preston (Member of Parliament) join in announement of project Ojibwa (top). Deborah Jarvis and Joe Preston examine an illustration of the submarine while it was in service with "periscope" (bottom).

Victoria’s Secrets at Backus-Page House

The Backus-Page House kicked off the season on May 2 & 3 with the opening of the exhibit, “A Peek at Victoria’s Secrects.” This exhibit was made possible by a collaborative effort between local historic textile artisan Tracy Gordon and Lori Milos-Ivanski, museum curator. the majority of the items on display are on loan from Ms. Gordon’s expansive period and replica textile collection. Tracy works out of her studio (located on Main Street in Dutton, Ontario) creating historic replica undergarments as well as period outerwear. Her textile portfolio displays a broad chronological range, as does her textile artifact collection.

On hand at the opening, in her just completed period dress, Tracy noted that people are still fascinated by corsets. She says, contrary to popular belief, a well-made corset is not uncomfortable. The women’s liberation movement may have only negative things to say, Tracy says she enjoys the positive effect they have on your carriage and demeanor.

A Peek at Victoria’s Secrets, Exploring the 19th Century Fashion Silhouette continues until July 6 at the Backus-Page House Museum, 29424 Lakeview Line, Wallacetown.

You are invited to come to Port Stanley for the Canada Day weekend celebrations from Thursday, July 1st to Sunday, July 4. Come all 4 days or just when you please. You can set up your easel for plein air painting anywhere in the village. Bring paintings or prints to sell - no fees or commissions to pay.

Canfest will be a family-friendly festival with events and attractions have been planned to draw people to Port Stanley.
GT's on the beach second stage - each day, with a magic show on Saturday, and learn to stilt walk on Sunday. THURSDAY - cake and veterans' parade at the Legion, a kids' treasure hunt, and on the beach - an attempt to get into the Guinness Book of World Records for the most people on the beach singing O Canada at one time, a band and fireworks. FRIDAY - a boardwalk colouring contest (probably only for kids - you would have an unfair advantage!) SATURDAY - boat parade and evening dinner/dance/awards ceremony at the Legion, family sand sculpting contest.

The Canfest Committee has worked to make Port Stanley a destination for all for this weekend. They're planning for crowds. All are welcome, from beginners to experienced artists.

If you are planning to set up any time during the festival, you can forward your name to Francie Dennison at editor@portstanleynews.com so that you can be included in some of the advertising for the festival.

Wardsville Bicentennial Barn Quilt Project

Wardsville: There are ominous war clouds on the horizon. It is 1810 and the British military has asked a Mr. George Ward and his wife and young family to establish a way station somewhere between Delaware and Detroit. Born in 1743, he is no spring chicken. A soldier in the British army, he saw service in Ireland (twice), in Canada (Quebec and Three Rivers) and the United States (Ticonderoga and Boston).

Sure enough, two years later, he is once again involved in a war. In 1814, it's on his door step and the lives of his wife and 5 children are threatened.

Wardsville citizens are learning about this couple's life in dribs and drabs as they prepare to celebrate the founding of their small village on Father's Day weekend. Glenn Stott, re-enactor and historian, has
been pouring over the losses claimed for London and Western Districts after the War of 1812. "We forgetthat war was fought on our soil - right here in Middlesex and Elgin," Stott says. "Think how precarious their survival was as early settlers. And then consider how their hurculean efforts to establish their farms were razed to the ground by various raiding parties, battles, and skirmishes over the course of
three years. This was war - not 'tough times'".

To commemorate the hardships and losses suffered by those early settlers - our families - from 1812 to 1814, Wardsville is organizing the Wardsville Bicentennial Barn Quilt Project.

The first Barn Quilt called "Farmer's Wife" has been completed by Rick Sommer. This mural which measures 8 feet by 8 feet pays homage to Mrs. Ward and all the other women who had to be fierce warriors to
survive. It is currently being installed at the Wardsville branch of the Thamesville Credit Union.

There are 29 left to paint. The first training workshop was held Saturday, March 13, 2010 in the basement of Beattie Haven. The goal is to engage citizens through the visual arts, as well as through expression, celebration and preservation of local historical heritage.

In the basement of Beattie Haven, the block designs will be blown up to 8' X 8' and painted on special outdoor plywood. The plywood will be primed; the design stencilled and then painted with outdoor latex
paint. The finished product will be protected with a sealant for outdoor display.

Wardsville is unofficially kicking off the Commemoration of the War of 1812 - 1814 which begins in less than 24 months. Wardsville challenges Elgin and Middlesex counties to

learn more about our heritage

deepen the connection among our local artists, artisans and
community, and

support and celebrate our hard working volunteers.

The 30 barn quilt murals which will be hung in various places throughout Wardsville area are based on a 30-block commemorative quilt that tells the story of George and Margaret Ward. Each block has a unique design and symbolizes a chapter in the Ward's life. The "Soldier", "Salute to Colors" and "Victory" blocks represent George's long history with the British Military. "Farmers Wife" and "Tree of
Life" honour Mrs. Ward and all the women who worked beside their men while raising a family in conditions we cannot imagine. All quilters are called to add their stitches. This heritage quilt will go up in Beattie Haven's quilting room soon. Call Eleanor Blain for details
519) 693-4616.

These 30 highly-visual blocks will be stragetically placed in Wardsville and surrounding area to create a Barn Quilt Story Telling Trail, the first in North America. There's a barn quilt movement in the United States, but it seems that Wardsville is the first to coordinate such an ambitious series of barn quilts inspired by local history.
Elgin County Railway Museum Strategic Planning Presentation Sun Oct 25

Over seventy-five people gathered at the CASO Station at 2pm on Sunday October 25th to hear about strategic planning being undertaken by the Elgin County Railway Museum.

The Michigan Central Railway shop, constructed in 1913 as a maintenance repair facility, is a large piece of St. Thomas's remaining built railway heritage.

It is the home of the Elgin County Railway Museum.

Members have diligently restored its collection of large rolling stock as well as acquiring many other interesting smaller railway artifacts.

Open only in the summer, the Museum hosts guided tours, railway events and model railway shows

The Museum also brings to St. Thomas the ever-popular Day Out with Thomas the Tank Engine.

In 2005, a part of the roof of the Elgin County Railway Museum was ruled unsafe. Water could get into the building, it was unheated, and its many broken windows gave an impression of abandonment. The Corporation did not own the building but was leasing it from CN. A study of the feasibility of purchasing it, of raising enough funding for roof replacement and restoration, or finding a different site, became paramount. The resources to complete this analysis were mustered and it was undertaken over the past two years.

On Sunday, a Public Support Analysis report was presented by consultant Susan Fortin-Smith and an Architectural review and proposals were presented by Tim Castle of SJMA Inc. Several architectural drawings illustrated a suggested plan for restoration to meet current safety standards, retain areas for train restoration work, and provide public space for visitors to visit and learn about St. Thomas and Elgin County's railway heritage.

For more information about the museum, visit http://www.ecrm5700.org

Backus Page House Pioneer and Nature Adventure Day Camp--July 30th

On Thursday July 30th, children learned rug hooking in the Backus Page House with Stacie Littlejohn.

The activity was one of many during the museums Pioneer & Nature Adventure Day Camp for children ages 6 to 12. Each day centers around themes that relate to pioneer life, local history and the environment. The second week of day camp runs August 10th to 14th. A highlight of these camps is always the opportunity for the children to interact and learn with local history experts.

During her presentation, Stacie explained that rug hooking is a craft which was brought to the area 200 years ago. It started in the eastern seaboard in Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and the thirteen colonies and settlers brought the craft with them when they came to the Talbot settlement in 1809. Rug hooking used fabric strips from worn garments and burlap bags. It was a "chore of poverty" seen more in rural areas. People in cities and towns tended to be more wealthy and could afford rugs.

Pictured below are Stacie demonstrating, Sarah Nagy from the Day Camp assisting and several camp participants trying their hand at hooking.
