On Saturday October 28th, a new Memorial Park was opened in downtown St. Thomas. A memorial to the Afghanistan War was unveiled by the Honorable Elizabeth Dowdeswell, Lieutenant Governor for the Province of Ontario. The Park brought together the Great War Memorial formerly located at the St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital, the WWII Korea Cenotaph and the new Afghanistan War memorial.
Kids looking for a scary good time visited the St. Thomas Public Library on October 27th for their annual haunting. The Library was also one of the stops on the Downtown Development Board's Pumpkin Prowl.
St. Thomas Public Library, October 20, 2017 – Construction has officially started on the new reading garden on the west side of St. Thomas Public Library. The reading garden will be located outside of the Ingram Room (the children’s programming room) on the Lower Level.
CENTRAL ELGIN – The numbers are in and the County of Elgin and the Railway City Cycling Club are pleased to announce that the Inaugural 2017 Ride Across County of Elgin (R.A.C.E.) raised $3,230 for the Elgin – St. Thomas United Way.
Elgin County Railway Museum presented the St. Thomas "Calamity City" Haunted Walk on the evenings of October 6th and 7th. The walks led several groups along a downtown path from the Railway Museum to the Princess Ave Playhouse where they learned a little of St. Thomas' railway history, including the story behind a tragic accident in 1887. Coordinated by Lori and Doug Sands, restless spirits with stories to tell made appearances along the way - they were played by several volunteers from the Elgin County Railway Museum and the Elgin Theatre Guild.
Wallacetown Fair 157th Edition presented something for everyone throughout the weekend, including a Friday Dance with Marshall Dane, OPP Golden Helmets, Wallacetown's Gpt Talent, The Magical World of Majinx, Mud Bogg with entertainment by The Mudmen, plus old favourites seen in some of the Sunday photos below.
Several organizations in St. Thomas and Elgin County enthusiastically joined in the national Culture Days celebration September 29th to October 1st 2017. They invited public participation in well over fifty events at many locations. Find photos below from a few of Saturday's activities.
Rural history and rural roots came to life on September 9th and 10th at the annual Farm Show in the heart of the Talbot Settlement. A variety of activities provided opportunity for all, including kids to learn about heritage skills.
