Kids flocked to Pinafore Park on Friday July 8 for the Third Annual Fishing Derby sponsored by Bear Adventures and the YMCA of St. Thomas Elgin. It was an opportunity to take part in National Fishing Week, experience the fun of fishing, and win prizes too.
Mark Girdauskas had opportunity to learn a bit about the event and to catch on camera some of the action and the delight of kids enjoying the outdoors.

"I talked with Kevin Morland from Bear Adventures. He was happy to provide some background about the event. He noted that Bob Izumi, the host of Canada's longest running fishing show "Real Fishing Show", created a non-profit organization called Fishing Forever to preserve Ontario’s fishing resource for fishermen. They donated $1000 to the Pinafore Park derby.
There were tons of great prizes from many sponsors, including the Dixie Tackle Shop. The St. Thomas Police gave out free hotdogs as part of Kids N Cops Fishing Day.
There were 130 children registered for the event and still more signing up as I was leaving.
From sunfish, to small mouth bass, the kids had a great time. Some might have wanted another person to put the worm on the hook, but it was a day of smiles and laughter for all.
Kevin Morland can be contacted at 519-631-1684."

Picture it - kids splashing in a farm pond, fishing with your family from a cottage dock before breakfast. Fishing is a family and a personal celebration of the great outdoors. Whether chasing tournament bass or rolling a cast across a river, it's all about celebrating life in Ontario. Fishing is a significant part of our past and represents our rich and diverse cultural heritage. If we're to pass on to the next generation a piece of this important natural resource, we will need help. Conserving fisheries is the responsibility of all Ontarians.
